The wine has an intense, opaque deep ruby colour, very slight gradation to the rim. Bright and vivacious in the glass, very youthful. The nose is brooding and restrained at this stage, yet beginning to emerge with deep, dark fruit, cassis, plum and black cherry. The palate is beautifully structured due to the intensity of the fruit and intricate tannin structure. The wine already exhibits rich juiciness and savour but offers a long maturation potential of up to 20 years. Platter ****½

Rustenberg Vineyards producing the grapes for Rustenberg wines climb the rich red slopes of the Simonsberg and Helderberg. The style of wine determines the vineyard to be used. A range of slopes allows site-specific plantings that enhance varietal characteristics.

Deliciously sweet, yet still bright, fresh and complex, with honeyed characters and hints of lemon. Made from Chenin Blanc 76% and Crouchen Blanc 24%. The hand-picket grapes were let to dry on straw for 4 to 5 weeks allowing the grapes to slowly dehydrate, concentrating the natural sugar and flavours of the grapes. Parker: 88

Steven Tanzer from IWC rates the wine 93 pts: Good deep ruby-red. Primary aromas of blackcurrant, licorice and menthol. Dense and silky on entry, then lush, ripe and sweet in the middle, but tightly coiled and vibrant. Cassis and licorice, as well as very smooth tannins, saturate the entire palate. This is almost deceptively approachable today but its sheer energy and impeccable balance suggest that it will gain in bottle for a decade or more. Platter ****½

The wine shows a rich ruby colour with an almost opaque centre. Cassis, pencil lead, spice and red berries abound on the nose. The delicate fruit, tannin structure and fine acidity indicate a wine of balance and finesse reflective of the Vergelegen terroir. IWC: 94 Platter ****½

The nose is complex, showing blackcurrant, cedar wood, lead pencil and cigar box aromas. These develop in the glass and are joined by raspberry, black cherry, spice and a hint of gaminess. On the palate the wine is concentrated but elegant, with fine-grained tannins. These tannins soften even further in the glass, resulting in a luxurious wine. Platter ****½
